Story

In Spring 2022, a couple of applied linguistics PhD students got together and wanted to build something fun and meaningful for autonomous adult language learners. They knew that language learning apps today are engaging, yet something was missing—these apps rarely engage users in real-world activities where they could enhance their communicative and literacy skills in experiential contexts ("learning by doing").

A from the co-founders:

As experienced language teachers, we have witnessed how learners are most excited when completing tasks that are both realistic and challenging. And as lifelong language learners, we know that repetition and translation are only useful until a certain point, after which can become boring—and even worse, "a waste of time." If the goal of learning a foreign language is to be able to communicate with speakers of that language and to accomplish everyday tasks, then repetition and translation are simply not enough.

So, the idea of GOALL (Great Online Activities for Language Learning) was born. Informed by cutting-edge language research, we designed a language learning app that allows adult learners with post-novice language proficiency to advance their skills through pedagogically structured tasks and meaningful gamification. Our mission is to help adult language learners unlock their potential through customizable, scaffolded, and research-grounded task-based activities.

We hope you enjoy GOALL as much as we enjoy creating it!
